Let me first start by emphasizing that I in no way condone dog fighting, and believe that someone needs to be held responsible for the dog fighting ring that has been allegedly linked to Michael Vick. However the United States is a country where everyone is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The fact of the mater is Michael Vick has not been convicted or even arrested for crimes related to dog fighting. Despite my personal belief that Vick did play a large role in the ring, at this point I have no grounds to support any cause that is putting pressure on the NFL to suspend him. PETA is not the only cause to take up early petitions to have Vick suspended, the Humane Society and even Rev. Al Sharpton is joining in. Even if the NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell wanted to suspend Vick, at this point he has no substantial basis for doing it because this is the United States of America.
In a week or two from now if Vick is convicted and given a slap on the wrist fine, then the NFL can, should, and probably will take action. Until that point, it really bothers me that there are so many people that are willing forgo the basic human rights this country affords us over alleged unethical treatment of animals. People argue “but Vick will receive celebrity status, they will never convict him in the US.” Even after the jailing of Paris Hilton and Martha Stewart, people still believe this? Over the past few years our judicial system has proven that they will convict and justly punish even the biggest celebrities.
